How Would 1910s Dresses Fasten? Three Examples of Closures and Fitted Linings
Переглядів 1,9 тис.Рік тому
This video shows three period examples of dresses spanning 1912-1921. In this video I show three different examples of closures, that feature the most common ways dresses would close. Exceptions to this would be "lingerie" or "lawn" dresses, that were made of a single layer of cotton and fastened up the back, and "house" or "wash" or "apron" dresses, that would fasten up the front. When making ...

Thank you for this helpful tutorial! I just got your pyjama and housecoat pattern with the square "princess seam" panels on the housecoat. I am really struggling with how to join these pieces to the main coat pieces without causing bad bunching /getting extra gathers caught in the seam (specifically at the square corner join). The main coat body that is snipped to the circle aligning to the square princess seam pieces is what's causing me difficulty. Is there any chance you could make a tutorial video explaining how to join those pieces neatly?

Hello! I'm so sorry it's being fussy to put together! I'm not able to make a video right now (kind of swamped with life stuff), but I would suggest making sure that is snipped to the seam line, and if there's a curved shorter seam, you may want to snip in that edge also, to help it ease to the other seam. Fabric can affect the way these go together, too, so some really take a lot of pins and patience. Feel free to send me photos through Etsy if you need more help, and I'll do my best to help out! Best wishes!

Thanks so much for sharing the historic method originally conceived for this shoulder line. It was interesting, but I am so confused as to why the sleeve isn't set onto the facing as though it was the armhole and then topstitched in place. It's topstitched anyway, but this method relies heavily on prep and dexterity, whereas the other way would be just as accurate in the end but use a whole extra 3 feet of thread.

I realize this was a very quick overview, but I can't help thinking you should have mentioned cutting the holes on the facing and stitching them around the bound buttonholes. I mean it should be a no-brainer, but not everyone who sews knows that it needs to be done. It's a little thing, but it's something that many may need to be reminded about. Oh, and I couldn't fine the pattern on your website or your Etsy shop.

The dress on the right is very similar to my great grandmother's wedding dress, from 1912. All that was left when I was little was the bodice and omg, the hooks, the eyes, the snaps were so complicated but when it was all done up it looked great. Well as great as a terminally fragile mix of Persian silk, French lace and tiny faux crystals made for a woman wearing an industrial strength corset could look on a skinny 11 year old!

A few tips: OBVIOUSLY ITS HOT! Don’t burn yourself!! Try at home at your own peril. 1- if you find one, make sure it has the rods! I have no idea how to replicate or replace them. 2- heat them up HOT! Silk can take a higher heat than you think, but test on a scrap first. 3- I used a vinegar and water solution to spray on it before putting it through the machine. 4- my edges are pinked, so I haven’t tried a hemmed length yet. 5- it wants to go off center and pulls towards the right, so kept needing to readjust. 6- I found working in strips easier than a long, sewn, length. Because it likes to go off kilter. 7- you’ll need to heat them OFTEN. I bet factories had more than one set of rods. 8- I just gathered the top edge. It’s not pleats, more like wiggles, so it won’t lay flat for sewing. 9- If you wash it, it will come out! It may also come out in humidity. So you may want to consider if tacking on trimmins is better for your project so you can remove and re-flute them later. Ok, that's it!
